Promontory Club Family Photos | Park City Family Photographer

January 13, 2020

I had so much fun working with this family; they were so kind and generous! They were all at their second home in Park City at the Promontory Club for the holidays, and it was a perfect time to get an updated photo. We lucked out with fresh snow on Christmas, so everything looked so beautiful! As a photographer, I love how their outfits came together, and the neutral colors are perfect for the winter scene. And I am obsessed with the mom’s coat; it looked so good for the snowy day in the mountains. Even though all of the kids are adults, they still put up with me, making them laugh and smile at each other, those are always some of my favorite images!

At the Promontory Club, they have the most beautiful lake and boathouse in the community; it is my new favorite place to take photos in Park City! It looks like it is straight out of a magazine or a movie, it was so picturesque! Being a Promontory Club Family Photographer is a seriously a dream!

Tips for Winter Photoshoots

Some people are afraid of the snow for family photos; if you dress correctly and embrace the cold, they will be some of your favorite photos! Here are a few tips to make it through a snowy, winter photoshoot:

Have outfits that look good with or without your coats. A lot of times, we will start without coats on and then add them back in as it gets too cold. If you have the right layers, it will add to the shoot and give you more variety.

Wear good shoes, and this will make all of the difference. If you can keep your feet dry with a good pair of boots, you will stay warm for a lot longer. There are so many cute options for boots, and they look so good in photos! I love my Sorel and Timberland Boots.

If you want to wear gloves in the photos, make sure they aren’t too flashy or bright. You can also wear one glove on the hand in the back and keep yourself half warm! 🙂

A lot of people travel to Park City from warmer places and haven’t been accustomed to the cold. My best tip for dealing with the cold is your adjusting your mindset. Don’t think about how cold it is, focus on how much you love your family instead.

I am super easy going when it comes to doing photo sessions if you need to warm up, please let me know! I don’t ever want to make you too uncomfortable, and there is always time to warm up in the car or your home for a bit.

Some people take the winter off because they don’t like working in the snow, I love it and can’t get enough of all of the snowy photo sessions!

Amangiri Photographer

It is so crazy to look back on ten years! I feel like I have come so far in certain parts of my life, and in other parts of my life, I haven’t changed at all. My business has slowly grown over the last 15 years, I have always had a steady stream of clients, but not until the last 5 years did my income start to increase. For the first ten years, I was content with where I was at, I didn’t realize that there could be more. I discovered workshops, podcasts, and education courses in 2015, and was able to dream of something bigger for myself and for my business. I will always have things to work on with my photography, I want to improve every year. One thing that has stayed the same is my love for photography, I feel like that is one of my greatest strengths and reasons that I have been successful for so long. I love what I do, and I love working with new clients and connecting with clients that I have photographed for the last 15 years.

Here is a little highlight real for the past 10 years!

2010
Photographed my first international wedding in Cabo, Mexico.

2011
Got married to Cole Parker!
Traveled to England, Ireland, and Costa Rica.

2012
Started using film again in my work. Cole loves cameras, and he is always researching what cameras I should try. I have used film for lots of personal projects and travel. Working on my own projects has improved my client’s work.

2013
Cole got sick with meningitis, this set us back a lot, and we are still being affected by it today. He is almost back to normal, but he still struggles with frequent migraines.
I photographed my first couple at Amangiri and then became one of their preferred photographers. Amangiri is one of the biggest resorts that I work at, I work with so many amazing clients there every year since.
Took a cooking class in Italy, I have always loved making pasta, and cooking in an old flour mill in Tuscany changed everything! I love teaching others how to make pasta and photographing it along the way.
Traveled to England, France, and Italy.

2014
Photographed a wedding in London, England.
Traveled to Spain and England.

2015
Last year of doing Bridal Shows, this was such a huge step, my website was finally being found with my SEO, and social media began to be an excellent tool for marketing.
I celebrated 10 years in business, I co-hosted a party with The Riter Mansion to celebrate our businesses turning 10, and it was a huge success! We were able to turn it into a fundraiser to help those affected by the earthquake in Nepal, we raised several thousand dollars to send back to Nepal. I was able to send the money to those that I had just worked with before the earthquake hit.
I started investing in education. I attended my first big workshop in Nepal, I was able to learn from some of the most amazing people in the wedding industry, and I was able to recognize where my business could go. I started learning from podcasts and books, I know that as I increased in my business knowledge, my revenue increased dramatically every year.
My Nepal images were published in Cottage Hill Magazine.
Traveled to Nepal and Costa Rica.

2016
I hosted my first dinner party, which has become a part of my business since then. Instead of doing styled shoots that you take down after it is photographed, I set up styled dinners to photograph, and then enjoyed a beautiful setting with friends eating a lovely meal. I love entertaining other creatives, and vendors, it has been fun creating relationships with others over the years through dinner parties.
Photographed an engagement shoot in Tulum, Mexico.
Traveled to Mexico, Dominican Republic, The Netherlands, Hungary, and Austria.

2017
I started my printshop website and had a booth at Swiss Days selling my double exposure temple photos. It has been so fun adding this part to my business.
I started photographing in Jackson Hole. I have always been so inspired by the Tetons, we would always travel there growing up, and I always knew I wanted to do photoshoots there. I did eight shoots there the first summer, and in 2019, I did 24 sessions in Jackson Hole, and I met some of the most amazing clients from all over.
Traveled to France, Monaco, Italy, Cuba, France, and Denmark.

2018
I hosted my first Creative Workshop, where I taught attendees how to make a leather passport, and how to make fresh pasta. We ended the day with a beautifully styled dinner and talked about creativity. I have always been a creative person, I love making things with my hands, and trying a new art or hobby. As an artist being creative in other outlets has helped me to avoid burnout in photography. In 15 years, I have never wanted to quit or not go to a shoot, I get excited about every shoot. I wanted to help others find their creativity and avoid burnout, it was such a fun workshop.
In 2017 I made the goal to reach six figures, and I finally achieved it in 2018. I had never compared myself to others, and I have no idea what other photographers make. All that mattered to me was that I was working hard, paying my bills, and traveling a few times a year. I was very proud of myself for getting to that point. It gave me the confidence to keep reaching for other financial goals.
Traveled to Iceland and The Faroe Islands.

2019
I increased my prices 5 times in 2019, which lead to a 50% increase in one year. At the beginning of my business, I was afraid to raise my rates, and I held off for too long to make changes. I get several inquiries a day, and I couldn’t keep up with the demand, I was turning so many people away because I can’t shoot everything, so I started raising my prices every few months, and I kept booking clients. Right now, I am booking family photoshoots for what I use to book weddings for in 2010. I am working with my dream clients, they value my work and the experience that I am creating for them. I have loved all of my clients along the way, and they have all contributed to my success.
I invested in the Knowledge Business Blueprint, it is helping me become a better business owner, and I am in the process of creating a course to help others achieve success in their photography business.
I had 34 out of state shoots in 6 different states. I was on the road a lot this year, I always look forward to listening to inspiring books and podcasts while driving and flying.
Traveled to Canada.

Total Shoots in 10 years:

Weddings: 200
Family/Senior Sessions: 656
Number of total shoots: 1381

When I started photography, I envisioned my income being the fun money, our extra money. But when I married a student who got sick 2 years into our marriage, I had to reenvision what my photography would be. I had to figure out how to be the primary income and sustain a household. As I have been persistent and patient, I have built the dream life that I had before I got married. Through our challenges and trials comes our greatest joy. I had to dive deep into photography to provide, and it has made me a better photographer. I wouldn’t be where I am at today without having to push through and survive. I am so grateful to be able to see the growth that I have made, and I can’t wait to see the life that I will create in 2030!

Creative Awakening 2019 | Creative Workshop in Northern Utah

July 31, 2019

Creative Awakening

Photo from Michele Lee

This years Creative Awakening was such a beautiful day.  I love hosting these creative retreats, I love planning them and teaching others how to do something that they haven’t done before. I am so passionate about creativity, I truly believe creative living is the secret to living a fulfilling and joyful life.

This year we were so lucky to have Cover & Co sponsor the workshop, everyone received one of their beautiful aprons!  Follow their Instagram to get more info on when they will open their shop!

One of my favorite speakers said this quote and I live my life by it:

“The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Everyone can create. You don’t need money, position, or influence in order to create something of substance or beauty. Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty… Remember that you are spirit daughters (and sons) of the most creative Being in the universe. Isn’t it remarkable to think that your very spirits are fashioned by an endlessly creative and eternally compassionate God? Think about it–your spirit body is a masterpiece, created with a beauty, function, and capacity beyond imagination. We were created with the express purpose and potential of experiencing a fulness of joy. Our birthright–and the purpose of our great voyage on this earth–is to seek and experience eternal happiness. One of the ways we find this is by creating things. You may think you don’t have talents, but that is a false assumption, for we all have talents and gifts, every one of us. The bounds of creativity extend far beyond the limits of a canvas or a sheet of paper and do not require a brush, a pen, or the keys of a piano.  Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before–colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter. What you create doesn’t have to be perfect. So what if the eggs are greasy or the toast is burned? Don’t let fear of failure discourage you. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you–whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside. If you still feel incapable of creating, start small. Try to see how many smiles you can create, write a letter of appreciation, learn a new skill, identify a space and beautify it.”

Dieter F Uchtdorf, Happiness Your Heritage, October 2008 General Conference

When I get stuck with trying to find creativity in my business I turn to making something with my hands.  I love to experiment with all sorts of mediums, I love figuring out something new and it is so fun seeing the finished product whether it worked out or not.  When I am in my busiest season in the summer, when I barely have time to get it all done I crave time to make something whether it is baking or sewing or gardening and as soon as I can create it makes the busy season doable and I am able to be refreshed!

This year for the workshop I taught how to naturally dye fabric, I had so much fun experimenting with different dyes when I was preparing for it.  It was like magic seeing the results!  For the dyes we used avocado pits and skins, hibiscus, alder cone, daffodils, walnut shells, marigold and a variety of herbs.

During the workshop we had so much fun playing with the different dyes and how so many things can affect the color outcome.  Several people used dried hibiscus, and all of the colors came out so different.  Changing the water source, adding vinegar or boiling it multiple times brought the most beautiful changes.  I loved watching the excitement of this who attended.

In the afternoon I taught how to make ricotta gnocchi and fresh pasta.  I have always had a passion for making fresh pasta, I started making it in high school and have continued to learn to make different varieties at home, I also took a class in Italy, which I need to do again!  I love showing people how easy it can be to make and how it can change the flavors of your meal.  I love how food in other countries brings people together, it is an event and it creates opportunities for family and friends to have memories.  I think we need to create more food experiences in our culture, I can’t wait until I have a yard and a bigger place to host larger gatherings with family and friends.

As always we ended the day with a beautiful styled dinner, Amber Reverie created the most beautiful atmosphere for us to enjoy our meal.  Nikkol with Refine Studio created the most amazing menus and recipe cards, I am so obsessed with them and need one for every meal that I do and every recipe that I cook!  For dinner we started with charcuterie boards down the table and Caesar Salad.  For the main dish we had Shrimp Scampi with fresh pasta, the pasta literally melts in your mouth!  This is one of our favorite go to recipes, it is easy and so delicious!  Margaret with Smackerel made the most amazing Lemon Cake, it was to die for! She came to my workshop last year, so I had to support her in her awesome business.

When I was trying to get the workshop to fill up, I had the hardest time until a week before. Throwing a big event like this is super stressful because of the cost of putting it on.  A few weeks before the workshop I decided that this would be my last workshop for awhile, I hated announcing this, because I absolutely love doing them.  If you have been interested in coming to one, please let me know, so that I can find ways to fill them up a little more, so I am not paying people to come create with me! 😉  I am taking a course currently to learn how to fill up an event, we will see if I am brave enough to try one more time.  After the day was over this year, I truly can’t be done, because it brings me so much joy to teach and to see others create and be fulfilled.  I will definitely try to keep going forward with more, I don’t know how it will be or when the next one will be.  If you want them to continue, please email me so I can find ways to do it!  And I would love to chat about you wanting to come.

If you are feeling stuck or unmotivated in your life, find something to bring you joy, find something to touch in your hands and transform, life is always better when you can create something.  I love that I can share my talents with others, and hope you will do the same!

This workshop was held in beautiful Bear Lake, in Garden City, Utah.  The Farmhouse at Bear Lake was the perfect place for a retreat! The property was so beautiful and the kitchen was so dreamy to cook in.  There was so much space for all of our activities and enough rooms for anyone that wanted to stay the night.  I would go back to this venue in a heart beat and I am trying to get my extended family to stay here for our annual Bear Lake trip!!   It would be big enough for my large extended family!  They fill up fast for the summer, contact them to book your next trip or workshop!
